The Most Famous Colorful Fairs and Festivals in Agra

Agra is a colorful city and houses many fairs and festivals throughout the year. Agra is famous for its cultural diversity, celebrates every festival with full vigor and enthusiasm. All the major festivals and events feature parades, praying at temples and shrines, Hindu celebration and folk music and dances.

The  first auspicious festival is Pongal which is organized every year from January 13^th to 16^th.  The date of celebration of this festival does not change as it is based on the solar calendar (western calendar). This festival is mostly celebrated in small villages and in Agra city which primarily focuses on the second day.

Taj Mahotsav is another one such popular festival in Agra which also features in the Indian calendar. The festival is organized by the Uttar Pradesh tourism and celebrates the cultural heritage of Agra. This splendid festival is 10 days long fiesta and is held every year in the month of Febuary and March at Shilpgram near Taj Mahal.

 The event starts with an amazing procession inspired by Mughal grandeur. The highlights of the festival include drum beaters, folk artists, bedecked camels and elephants and the works of master craftsmen, adding a visual delight of the golden era of the Mughal Darbars. A large number of cultural artists perform at this event and showcase the traditional art forms, dances, music and cuisine. The attraction of this Agra event is the Taj Food festival which presents a 5,000 year old history and culture of the city.

Shopping is the other highlight of the Taj Mahotsav festival and assumes a look of a market where the Shopaholics can indulge in shopping for antiques, woodwork, ivory work and handicrafts. This festival attracts a large number of tourists from all over the world.

The festival of colors ‘Holi’ is one of the most popular festival of India. It comes in the month of March and it is very culturally celebrated in Barasna which is a town close to Agra. People of Barasna celebrate ‘Lath Maar Holi’ where the women try to hit their men with the help of long bamboo sticks over their heads.

Another happening event in Agra is a Ram Barat event. This event is celebrated by organizing the marriage of Shri Rama and is celebrated before the Hindu festival of Dussehra. The Ram Barat or procession (wedding procession) passes through different parts of the town.

Kailash Fair is another colorful fair in Agra and is organized especially in the Kailash temple. This glorious event is celebrated each year in the honor of Lord Shiva. People believe that Lord Shiva has appeared in the form of stone Lingam. It is celebrated every year in the month of August and September.

Bateshwar Fair is celebrated annually in the months of October and November in the honor of the presiding deity of the region, Bateshwar Mahadeo. While the Sharadotsav is a cultural show of various dances and the musicians perform at the most visited historical places of Fatehpur Sikri and Agra Fort.

Agra not only celebrates Hindu festivities but also main festivals of Muslims like Eid-UL-Fitr, Eid-UL-Adha and Muharrum following with congregational prayers. Id melas are very popular in the city and the beautiful Tazias are specially taken out in Muharram.

Along with these major festivals and fairs, a lot many other fairs are also celebrated like Kans Lila, Cattle Fair, Meta ki Puja, Holi Milap, Shitla Mela, Ram Lila and many more. Major festivals of Dusherra, Holi , Id-UL-Fitr are celebrated with the same enthusiasm.
